Ladakh & Zangskar a true paradise for trekkers? Yes,
very much so! Popular is trekking with ponies, but backpacking all the routes is of course also possible.

Find below an enormous list of treks, including classical and specially selected ones, with short descriptions. Mind you, any trek can be adjusted according to personal wishes, sometimes combined with others and there are many other possible routes (but how long will this make the list below then, already promising you on the homepage that we wouldn't overload you with information!)

Permits are required for the treks in Chang Thang, Durbuk Range and Nubra.

TREKKING IN LADAKH - Sham
(Sham is the lower northwest part of Ladakh down the Indus river)

Saboo to Igu9. Saboo to Igu

Best period: June to October
Duration: 9 to 10 Days
Short description: This classic trek is also called the "Baby Trek" because of the easy and mild hiking conditions. Starting from Likir, one passes through several villages among the richest in Ladakh and worth visiting are the monasteries of Likir, Ridzong and Tingmosgam on the way. The trek ends at Khaltse. This is the only trek that can be done throughout the year, as the passes are not very high and don't get snow-blocked during winter.

Duration: 10 Days
Short description: North of the Great Himalayan range, amongst a tangled knot of jagged mountains, lies a rugged and fascinating land, the once independent kingdom of Zanskar. Sandwiched between the Indus Valley and the main crest of the Indian Himalaya, this remote and inaccessible setting, well guarded by snowy mountain passes, has kept alive an archaic form of Tibetan Buddhism which flourishes in chain of far-flung monasteries, most of which occupy spectacular fortified locations, high on rocky ridges in isolated valleys.




11. Lamayuru to Darcha

Best period: June to October
Duration: 21 Days
Short description: One of the classic trekking tours of the region, the first day 7 hrs. Drive to Darcha (3,360 m) over Rohtang pass (3,978 m) the gateway to Lahoul, Spiti, Pangi and Zanskar valleys. We camp at Darcha to acclimatize, which is starting point of some major trekking tour. We cross Shingo La pass (5,090 m) to get into Zanskar. Many ancient gompa on the way: Phuktal gompa which is built under a huge cave and it provides the one of the fantastic view. Karsha gompa which is biggest in Zanskar region. Enroute we pass shepherds a ancient gompa. It is oldest gompa in Ladakh, with large library of Buddhist literature. Leh with their flocks of sheep and climb beautiful snow covered passes with panoramic views of the Great Himalayan range. Trek terminates at Lamayuru, which has is 147 Kms from Lamayuru.




12. Lamayuru to Alchi via Tar La

Best period: Mid-June to October
Duration: 5 days
Short description: An interesting tour on which one can visit three of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh, connected to the 11th century Buddhist saint Rinchen Zangpo. They are situated in Wanla, Mangyu and Alchi. The trek starts from the old Lamayuru monastery, crosses a few passes and ends at Alchi.







13. Lamayuru to Chiling

Best period: June to October
Duration: 5 days
Short description: A little traveled route crossing one of the most scenic and colourful passes in Ladakh, the Dungdungchen La. One starts from Lamayuru, crossing several passes to Chiling, along the Zangskar River. Chiling has a community of silver- and goldsmiths, worth visiting.







14. Henskut to Pangdam

15. Henasku to Wanla

Best period: June to September
Duration: 8 days
Short description: Beautiful and partly isolated route to the village of Wanla over several passes and through several villages, starting from Henasku, on the Leh to Kargil road. Don't forget to visit the beautiful monastery of Wanla!







16. Henskut to Padum

Best period: June to September
Duration: 12 to 13 days
Short description: Padum the capital of the ancient kingdom of Zanskar, Padum (3505 m) is the present day administrative headquarters of the region. With a population of nearly 1500, Padum can be described as the most populous settlement of Zanskar, otherwise a very scarcely inhabited valley. Incidentally, it is only in Padum that there is a community of Muslims constituting nearly half the township's population, its origin in the area dating from mid 17th century. Lately, Padum has become a famous as a major trekking base and a popular tourist destination. Several places of tourist interest in the vicinity of the township can be visited in the course of entertaining walks.




17. Henskut to Zangla

Best period: June to September
Duration: 10 to 11 days
Short description: Lying deep in the northern arm of Zanskar at the end of the 35 km. Long rough road from Padum, Zangla was being ruled by a titular king till his death a few years back. The old castle now in ruins except from a small chappel, occupies a hill, overlooking the desertic valley below. Nearby is the old Nunnery worth a visit for the austere life style of the small monastic community of nuns. An old monastery situated in the nearby village of Tsa-zar has exquisite frescos that should be missed. The village lies mid-way between Stongdey and Zangla. Zangla is the nodal point on the popular Padum-Strongdey-Zangla-Karsha-Padum round trip, which covers most of the cultural sites of Zanskar.
